His wings beat painfully against the dark night sky. They weren't meant to fly, at least not anymore. There used to be a time, several years ago, when his wings were glossy and healthy, but now they seemed to make others sad when they looked at them. Because of this he rarely flew or showed his wings, leaving him wobbly in the air. He clenched his fist, his nails leaving red crescents in his palm. Eli didn't understand why people had to be so infuriating. Why did they have to try to understand him? He didn't want anyone to. He was fine how he was, living by himself, belonging nowhere. There wasn't a reason for him to exist, but she always popped up everyone. She was always in his thoughts. He could hear her now, telling him to stop moping around. Well she could just stay out of his life. Eli had said that so many times, thought it so much more. Yet she always came back. He didn't even know the girl's name. Before he could curse her again, his wing twisted and he suddenly found himself falling. The wind tore against his pale face, it tried to tear out his black hair. Eli squeezed his eyes shut, preparing for the pain bound to come. His stormy blue eyes were fearful. How high up was he? Hopefully not so much that he'd die. He couldn't, not yet.
A branch snapped as he fell through the canopy, and another. With each branch he it, he loud out a cry of pain. It felt as though his bones were breaking, but they were stronger than that. He fell through the last of the branches, falling to the ground with a massive thump. Eli groaned in pain, and tried to keep in the tears that were stinging behind his eyes.
"You need to be more careful, Eli!" Her voice seemed to shout in his ear. He rolled onto his back and propped himself against a tree, his body painfully rejecting the movement. "If only you weren't some blind freak. Maybe then you'd be able to fly!" Her annoying voice mocked him again. Eli tried to ignored it, he really did. But he couldn't ignore insults thrown at him endlessly, especially about something he couldn't help.
"Be quiet...just be quiet." He muttered, unable to make himself sound angry. Maybe she was like him--maybe she shouted at him and followed him around because she was sad, depressed. Maybe she needed some company?
"Like you? I'll never be like you!" She laughed at him rudely. Had he said that out loud? She always seemed to know what he was thinking. "And company? I'm only with you because I have no choice."
Eli wrapped his hands around his knees and pulled them close to his body. He placed his chin on them, and allowed his sightless eyes to gaze off in the distance. The man would heal soon, he was sure of it. He'd always been a fast healer, a fall was no exception. Soon he'd be able to walk--he wouldn't be flying for a while--for miles if he wanted. But for now, he could only sit and wait out the night.
