Raphael practically sprinted down the long, shadowy hallway, apologizing as he bumped into one guard after another. He knew he had been out of his chamber for too long; he dreaded what would come of it. When he came to the door, he fumbled with his amulet, his fingers clumsy. Finally he yanked it off, waved it in front of the door knob, and the door clicked open. He threw the door open, slammed it behind him, and glanced about his room. It was a modest place, but very wide. This place was built for him to take refuge in in times of great need, but often it never felt like a home to him.
His footsteps echoed as he padded across the cobblestone to the left wall, opposite the door. It didn't look like anything was there, but Raphael knew better. It had been some time since he had last done this. He hoped his absence hadn't made things worse. He pressed his hand and ear against the wall, listening. Absolute silence was all he heard. The wall faded as if it were never there, and he walked past it into a vast, empty space with nothing but floorboards and short cast iron railing going around the space. Everything else above and around him were stars. The endless skies of stars. It felt strange, facing stars at this hour. But he knew that he was no longer in the world that had a concept of night and day. Night was the sky, and day was the stars. Nothing more.
Raphael took a deep breath, preparing for the worst. He called out softly, "The Ruins." The stars were covered by a mirage of the Firefly Ruins. It was as if he could walk off the platform and step right into it. Raphael closed his eyes and concentrated, feeling the energy waves bounce up and down. There had to be middle ground somewhere. As he tried to pull them all to one point, he heard the dying caw of a bird. He glanced up at the image, and saw a small, rare species of bird come plummeting downward from a tree. It lay there on the ground dead. "No.. No! No!" Raphael slammed his hand against the iron railing. He had been too late. He could feel the absence of this creature's presence. It was like a black hole, taking all senses of its life with it. Raphael sighed and collapsed against the railing. "I can't do this on my own.. I can't.." he muttered solemnly.
